Skin Scabbing Splitting and Coming Off Following Trauma Injuries

Vardi got cast at the weekend.

Now his entire off side where he was laying and scrabbling on the ground to get up is covered in scabs and is now cracking and peeling off exposing new pink skin underneath.....he is so so sore.

We are talking huge areas here.....the entire hip and flank, the entire rib cage, the shoulder, side of his head, ear, and top of his neck.

Vet has said let it happen and ensure it is kept clean at all times as the risk of infection on such an area of exposed skin is high. We have to hose him 3 times a day and apply cream or the skin dries out and is so painful for him.....he even finds the water from the hose painful and will let us apply the cream but I can tell it is really hurting him.

Obviously all this new skin is in danger of getting sunburnt as well....cream is really not doing the trick for him and is keeping it too wet we have tonight applied Green Clay with the thought that it will keep it clean and as it dries and comes away will gently bring the shedding skin with it.

My OH saw it tonight and described him looking like a Cow Skin rug you see in IKEA we have huge strips of skin coming away.

Anyone ever had this before? WHat did you do? How was your horse following it? Any thing you used that eased the pain and discomfort?

Sorry I was in no fit state to take pics today....but OH will at the Weekend.....it won't be pretty.

Poor chap! I don't have any advice I'm afraid but I really hope he heals quickly!!

Vet has kept him on Metacam for another week. So he has painkillers but it is still sore.

The only thing I can think of is Aloe gel, sounds like you'd need a lot of it tho xx
