Default Grey parents foal looks dun anyone know if this is possible.

My 5 week old colt is starting to lose his baby coat around his muzzle and eyes. I expected him to go grey but he hasn't got the grey specs, has a dorsal stripe at the mo and he now looks decidely dun around his eyes. There are a lot of duns on his grey sire's side (Connemara) and his grandparents on his grey dams side were grey (ID) and bay (TBxSWB). I'm not bothered what colour he goes as he's a super looking chap but just curious to know if any other colour than grey is possible.

Unless one of his parents is homozygous for grey he could stay solid coloured. His dam must be heterozygous as she has a bay parent.

This site might help:

Thanks appylass, I'll have a look at the site.

Have also put this post on breeding section as I put on vet section by mistake.

My friend has a highland born yellow dun. The pony is 16 now and she is a silver grey.

Grey is a really peculiar colour. My friend's completely white arab has papers stating it was born chestnut with 4 white socks and a blaze. When the horse is wet you can see the margins of the socks etc. My chestnut mare is a different shade every year (and summer and winter obviously) and when I first bought her had a black mane and tail. Now only her tail is largely black, her mane is body coloured. Your little one might turn out to be a mouse-dun?

A friend of mine has a grey mare, her name is Ruby, based on her being dark until she was a few years old, then she suddenly turned into a beautiful grey!
