Navicular Bursa inflammation in horse

Has anyone had any experience with their horse having an imflammation of the navicular bursa? My friends aged horse has been diagnosed with this condition although it is important to say that there is no degeneration of the navicular bone itself. There is wear and tear to the DDFT which was shown following an MRI scan. Options that have been discussed are draining of the fluid build up in the bursa and then injection with corticosteriods or if this shows no marked appearance on the lameness the horse is showing then the owner has the option of going down the surgical route although apparently this is deemed not to be very sucessful at present.

Has anyone had the injections into the navicular bursa and if so what was the outcome and what kind of work (if any) is the horse in? The horse in question is used primarily for hacking, and general schooling. She is not galloped, jumped or competed in any discipline. She is on box rest at the moment and will undergo the injections shortly.

My horse has a variety of foot problems which an mri showed 7 things in one foot and 11 in the other, both ddft had holes in them and he also has navicular and his lateral collateral ligaments had also gone!! My vet was not very optimistic but after 2 years box rest he has now been in light work for a year and touch wood is absolutely fine. I did not want to have the steroid injections in his navicular bursa as a friend of mine had one and it got infected and had to have 2 operations to sort it out. This I believe is fairly common. DDFT tears take ages and ages to heal so a long box rest is paramount. Also, what is vital is to get a good farrier as I believe this has been invaluable in keeping him sound.

Have a horse a few weeks ahead of yours by the sound of it. We injected into the navicular bursa and gave a Tildren drip. He is currently shod with wedges and a gel injected under the pad to help support and cushion the foot. He is sound and moving better than he has for a long time. He will come into work in August with a view to light hunting, but it will be very much seeing how he goes. I'm impressed with how quickly he became sound and happy in himself.

my horse has lots of problems djd navicular and collatral ligament damage and he sixteen had steroids in bursa didnt work had tildren twice didnt work had irap and after two months after last injection now back in work we had our first canter round the school twice on both reins tonight im so thrilled as he was going to be pts i also feed recovery eq and he now barefoot i did have wedges and gel all for two days he was ten times worse and couldnt walk

My horse was diagnosed with this in his near fore plus DDFT adhesions and collateral ligament damage to both fronts, both hind suspensories and kissing spines at the begining of june. He has has had triamcinolone, hyaluronic acid and amikacin injections, shockwave on all 4 and has had 2 of his 3 IRAP in his fore feet and is on small paddock turnout as wouldn;t settle in a stable. I am quite optomistic as he looked sound as he trotted over to me today...although this could be wishful thinking. He is due back for a proper reaasesment on 27th July....good luck.....my boy is only 6 so age is against him really!
