Which one would you buy???
      #5024000 - 14/11/2009 16:15

Just looking for some opinions for a friend on which horse to buy. Last week, we went to look at some youngsters for sale, and are very interested in two - a yearling and a filly foal. Trouble is, neither of us can decide which one to buy. Friend's husband has suggested we just buy both - but I think that will be impractical with two horses already on the scene (one semi retired mare and a 7 year old gelding who competes in dressage). So, the question is, which one do we go for?

Yearling is very nice bay filly - lovely paces, nice temperament and confo. She is by Depardieu (who is by De Niro), out of a TB mare (who did race, albeit not terribly sucessfully, but seems to be well bred, although I know nothing about TB breeding and has thrown some very nice foals). Her trot was breathtaking when we saw her turned loose in the school.

Then we saw the little filly foal, who was lovely. She is by a nice young stallion who my friend tried to breed her old girl with (later found out mare had problems which meant she couldn't carry). Stallion has Ramiro Z and Krack C lines. Her dam is a Bavarian WB who was never broken, but seems like a nice sort with Japaloupe S breeding.

The problem is that we can't decide between the two. It's difficult to compare a little baby (who is still with mum, but will be weaned in the next few weeks), with what looks like an almost fully formed horse.
We're leaning towards the yearling, because she looks more like the finished picture, but the foal is lovely and looks very much like her dad at the moment (who we like a lot and were disappointed not to be able to breed with the old girl). Friend has own land, but both would probably stay at breeders for the winter.

Which one would you go for?
Oh, and G&Ts for reading all of that!

Quite different types - what will this youngster be aimed at in the future? I prefer the sound of the foal, due to her breeding and type, but that's which I'd go for and my preferences might differ from yours completely

Why not buy both? They would be good companions for each other. If the yearling is looking good now she will probably be stunning as an adult. Most youngsters seem to go right "off" as yearlings. I have a lovely De Niro four year old who was stunning as a foal but a bit gruesome as a yearling...

Yep I'd buy both if you have got the money and the space forthe winter then you can get a feel for the pair and I'm sure you would make money on them come spring now isn't a prime time for buying horses + you could ask for a discount for buying in bulk !

Would primarily be aimed at dressage, possibly with a little bit of showing thrown in too.
I personally think the foal is better bred, but it's so difficult to tell what she will look like in a few years time. At least with the yearling, you can make a rough guess! I think both will turn out pretty nicely.

I had suggested getting both, that way they could keep each other company whilst growing up (although they would have the other two there as well). Money isn't really an issue, it's more the time that it will take. In a few years time, the old girl will probably be an expensive lawn mower, but the gelding will hopefully still be competing at a decent level. Trying to bring on two youngsters at once is a pretty big commitment to make, considering both of us work pretty much full time.

Such a dilema!!!

If money wasn't the option then I think the idea of buying both is a good idea - company for each other as babies, and then you can sellthe one who is less suitable at a later stage - no need to think that if you buy both it is to keep both!

Foally is by Amoureux - who is lovely. I believe he's gone down south to compete now. Such a shame the old girl couldn't carry, bet they would have been a lovely combination!

Yearling is a safer bet as you know what she will look like roughly... but i know nothing about breeding etc so good luck whatever you decide!
