I have 2 young stallions who have not been graded as yet. Do they need to be graded before you can use them on your own mares? They are both very well bred and I own a "Ster" mare and would like to use one of them with her in the spring.

in an ideal world all stallion should be graded if not performance tested, but its up to you as an individual? you will have people for it and against it. good luck on what you decide. if i am honest though i used my 3yrs tlaloc m colt on my mare and foal is due in febuary, but he will be presented next year when he has grown up a bit.

The problem you could face is when it comes to registering the foals as you will not have a recognised covering certificate to offer to the larger of the stud books.
Where are you thinking of registering the foals????

I have used our ungraded stallion on one of our mares this year! Hadn't intended to but she didn't hold at stud and came into season when she was back home so we ended up using him. We had originally planned to use him over her next year, but it just happened that it would have been awkward to take her back to stud so we used him and she held to him!
We hope to try going down the grading route with him next year so hopefully if he does pass the grading we will be able to register the foal with him on the papers. If he doesn't grade we can still register him but we are restricted with which stud books. Some seem quite happy to put him down as long as we have DNA tests done to prove parentage. If we don't the foal will go down as unknown breeding.
-------------------- Lead, follow or by all means to go in another direction... but have fun and enjoy whichever route you choose.... Life is too short, leave this world with a big grin on your face!!

That's what I am unsure about. I suppose if they dont grade it, it will be parentage unkown. There is so much snobbery at the gradings I have attended. Just because they are homebred and don't come with massive price tags attached to them from auctions I feel that they are looked down upon. In my view they are boh well bred - for showjumping - and the foals would be retained for my personal use. Its a bit of a minefield and need some guidance.

Hi, If it's your own stallion and your own mares you can do what you like, espically if you are going to keep the foals. If you were breeding a top level horse then the covering cert would be an issue but I can't see that in this case.
We have done this with a couple of ours (but our stallion is a 4 yo) as our young lad has shown some huge scope over fences etc.
I am also very uneasy with the various gradings. I haven't decided what to do with our youngster yet - the grading route or the performance route. just so many if and buts with the grading route! A lot of time, effort and money for some one to judge the future of a stallion in a few minutes.
