Pregancy loss - mad hormones, attachment issues
      #3593314 - 13/10/2008 20:44

Hi everyone, haven't posted for a while since my mare re-absorbed late Aug. Hope you all having better fortune...

Just wanted a bit of advice really as my mare clearly isn't back to her normal self & appears to be (understandably) hormonally scrambled. To give you some background info, she's at DIY livery where the mares & gelding are split but are turned out in large groups. All seemed ok right up 'til last weekend when a new livery mare arrived. Since being turned out, new mare & my mare have formed an obsessive attachment to one another. Both have come madly into season & can't bear to be separated. They literally go round the field like a riderless 'pas de deux' & call frantically & charge around in a panic if one is brought in (despite the presence of others in the field!).

Incidentally, The history on the other mare, who is a new purchase for her owner is that she was previously out 24/7 with only 1 companion.

Obviously, I'm concerned about this very uncharacteristic behaviour but it's also a pain to manage. My initial gut feeling was to force a split until perhaps the other mare has had time to settle into the field but thinking through the logistics, it can't really be done without big upheaval due to the field being within shouting distance to the stabling. It's also a bit unfortunate that the new mare has been given the next door stable to mine.

Because of the nature of the yard, my hands are more than a little tied in how this can be dealt with & I'm most likely going to just have to give it time but does anyone have any similar experiences?

I'm still beating myself up that this is all down to me (having put her in foal in the 1st place) & feel so responsible for the fact that all these probs which are still rumbling on are of my own making

How far along was your mare when she lost the pregnancy?

Early stages - don't know exactly when but 18 day scan done mid June - confirmed in foal. By Aug bank hol, looked suspiciously like she was strongly in season, scanned 1 week later - no foal!

This was the mare you gave me advice on actually AP, do you remember I was asking about whether early udder development was 'usual'?
