Dead Foal????
      #3588760 - 12/10/2008 06:57

All

I went to lend a hand with a friend who was having her little miniatures scanned on Friday. Before we start I need to point out that the scanner is a sheep scanner as miniatures are too small for a normal horse scanner and internal examinations.

Right, there was one mini in particular who looked very much in foal and very healthy, nice shiny coat, bright eyes, no discharge or funny smells. Upon the scan the chap announced empty...............now my friend has been breeding for eighteen years so kind of knows her stuff, so asked the scanner man to re check. Upon the secon check he said yes their is a foal but it is dead! The mare would have been due to foal May 09.

This is the first time that my friend has used a scanner man and so if she'd not had the mare scanned she still be going happily along.

The tricky bit is that neither of us are convinced. The mare is a picture of health and like I've pointed out, no discharge or smells. The Vets cannot do an internal examination due to the size of the mare.

What would you all be doing? Such a huge risk to bring on labour if the foal isn't dead. Could it just be that the sheep scanner isn't as good on a miniature horse. can a blood test be taken to prove the foal is dead?

Any advice welcomed please.

you could try Weefoal....... was developed for mini's, mares can be tested from 120 days onwards, here is the link

Lord, don't THINK of inducing! If the foal was dead and had been dead for more than about 24 hours then the mare would be SICK if she hadn't managed to abort it - and that's very unlikely! Even internal scans can give a false result regarding whether foal is there or not, alive or not,

I assume scanner man was NOT a vet but a sheep scanner operator, and THEIR skills are VERY variable on sheep - let alone horses!

My god...echo JanetGeorge 250%, there is no way a mare can keep a dead foal inside her without being very very ill!

you could also get the vet to take a blood test as hormone levels can tell you if they are in foal by measuring PMSG: This is best performed between 40 and 100 days after breeding.

An estrone sulphate blood test will give you a fair idea of pregnancy status, and the foal's health.

Thank you all for this. Both my friend and I are convinced she's in foal and very healthy.

I have reported back and once again, many thanks. It's great to know you can come on here and get some good advice when things like this crop up.

well humans can keep a dead baby inside them for weeks before having a miscarriage, so it might be possible with humans. But more than likely the scanner man made a mistake, fingers crossed
