The hayledge I am buying this year costs the equivalent of £3.30 a bale or £3.75 with delivery (a good hour's drive) and it is fabulous - not that much different from the £3 a bale that nice hay cost last year near me (and I had to collect it)

Hay is better as it gives them better condition, haylage just seems to give them a silage belly, but they go crazy for it..and thats all that counts lol!

Im using haylage as find the horses do much better on it - only feed hay if i run out of haylage. have only found them to get a silage belly if its not good quality.

hay.i have a very greedy warmblood who guzzles haylage so quickly she chokes and a pony that gets the squits so prefer to stick to good quality hay

i get a 6ft long by 3.5 ft bale of hay in the summer for £25.00 and lasts me forever, in the winter I buy haylage, about 4ft long, 3ft wide for the same amount and it keeps Flint in great nic over these next coming months

When you've opened your haylage how long does it last you?? You say keeps flint in great over these next coming months?? Once opened it should be used within 5 to 7 days

the haylage i get is great qaulity and I would rather feed dry haylage than dusty hay. He is kept in over winter with 1 hr turn out so it lasts about 3 weeks, he has never had any complaints from it, i get a new bale on a regualr basis. The best winters he has had with, the worst feeding poor forage, alot of the proffs on my yard use it or recommend it. If it sweats or goes off then it is binned

Sorry I didn't say did I. I feed haylage but buy the small bales which last about 3 days. But that way I know they're fresh and less wastage.

Mac is out 24/7 and we feed haylage in the field.
Dolly is at another yard and will be coming in for the winter (out 9-4ish during the day) and she will be on hay.

I would prefer to feed him hay as he is a very good doer but since he tasted haylage the fussy so-and-so point blank refuses to eay hay! My grand plan is to fill his haynet 50/50 with hay/haylage to keep us both happy! Hopefully it will work!

i use both, i give adlib haylage in the field but when they are in i tend to give hay as, the haylage would last to long and go off. but its all good quality, i pay £20 for a big square or round bales of haylage and £2 for really good hay, have been a regular customer of my hay man for years so i get the same rate i first payed five years ago for being loyal!!!

I use both - haylage for the horses / youngsters and hay for the ponies. We have limited turnout in the winter (mornings only - and only if the weathers good) so I like them to have as much to munch on as possible.
