foals and bonfire night
      #3585898 - 10/10/2008 21:11

My mare and foal are still living out but I was worried about what to do with them on bonfire night. Usually the horses stay out and have been fine but I am worried about my foal getting frightened. The fireworks are not to bad but there will be some and I know if the foal gallops around the mare and her companion horse will as well! The other option is to stable them both but the stable is not really big enough for the mare and foal (big beast) but I suppose they may be ok for one night. The companion horse will be stabled next door.
How has everyone else felt their foals have coped with bonfire night?????

I'd get them in and make sure I'm patrolling the yard. My YO had a foal which suddenly developed what appeared to be wobblers the day after a big firework party nearby. The assumption was that he'd run into a fence or tree whilst panicking and broken a bone in his neck. He had to be pts after 6 weeks. Fireworks - hate the bloody things, they should be banned.

the problem is, it isn't just one night anymore, they go on until Christmas then New Year then for birthdays. They drive me mad too. I would prefer to have just one big display run by each council on one night per year and maybe New Year.

I am really lucky my horses are kept on a large stud surrounded by stables and other land owners so they only hear them from a distance. If I was anywhere else I think I would bring them in and play a radio to dim the noise from outside. I think a lot also depends on the mare, if they ignore it, that may encourage the foal too as well.

Couldnt agree more with Daffodil, bloody things they should definitely be banned. It is like the Somme around us for about ten days over Bonfire Night and I have been wondering the same thing. I will be keeping my mare and foal in their large foaling box and will be there with them, just not worth risking anything happening is it?

Been lucky, never bothered any of mine, but they are used the bird scarers & guns going off, so whats a bit of light in the sky! As everyone says, they go on for days now so when would you actually bring them in.

Personally I'd bring the mare and foal in. Why risk it?

I think mine will come in. Last year the mare stayed out but she isn't bothered by anything! Plus as I've just moved yards, they seem settled but foal is still rather jumpy and erratic so I'd rather be safe than sorry. Don't want him panicking and going through the fencing or anything.

I always (try) to get to the stable early so that I can get everyone indoors before it gets dark! There is alot of fireworks in the area and if its dark it only intensifies the sound and the 'explosive' lights!
If I'm 5minutes late at least one of my mares is in a sweat with big white eyes!!
I also leave the lights on and come back later when everything has settled down to switch off the lights and check that everyone is OK. Do the same thing at New Years! = even worse fireworks that usually last upto 45 minutes!

I am thinking i will leave my mare and foal out. We are pretty much in the middle of nowhere except the fact we are next to an Army barracks. Due to our neighbours, the horses are used to flares, shooting etc so i am hoping that it shouldnt make much of a difference, the only time i will consider them being in is if the barracks have a big display, but last time they did that was about 7 years ago.
