Just a thought that I had today - I have created a google map which I have named 'HHO Forum' where anyone can add pinpoints on the map of interest. Since there are so many threads asking where things are, looking for local livery yards or local competition venues, this is a really useful way of joining all that information together. Anything of equestrian interest could be put onto the map...
- competition venues - xc courses for hire - livery yards - tack shops/saddlery - vetinary practices - riding schools
I'm sure you can think of more! If everyone adds a few of their favourite local venues, the map could quite rapidly become a comprehensive source of information. The google map features can also let you easily measure distances between locations, and work out driving routes to and from places - basically quite a useful tool.
Obviously this is something that requires input and a little bit of time.. and so it's up to you all if you want to use it.
As general guidelines - try and get the placemarker as accurate as you can - you can use the aerial photo view to precisely locate the facilities. If in the text box you can include some basic information about the feature - and preferably include a URL link to a website for further information - this will make it all the more useful.
I've not done one of these before so I don't know if there are technical issues... you will have to have a google account to log in and edit the map. If you have one, you should be able to click here -
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=103218839743148176024.00044b0f56c3364a2e4ff
to start adding! I have put in 3 places as examples. I'd vaguely suggest that you use the house symbol for livery, the horse symbol for comp venues, and a money symbol for tack shops.
I'm going to be adding more as and when I have time - please join in!

How about;
1. Racecourses
2. Training/breaking yards
3. Studs
4. Feed Merchants
5. Specialist suppliers such as side saddle accesories?
6. Specialist instructors? Freelance maybe? Or ones that teach specific disciplines?

A brilliant idea but it is getting very crowded already. Could there be a sub-section for counties or areas which could give more space to each place? Why has no-one thought of this before? Congratulations!

It does look crowded when you view the whole of England map, however the icons stay the same size when you zoom in, so effectively they get proportionally smaller and spread out.
Thanks to the person who changed mine from upturned teardrops to the proper icons, as I couldn't find how to put little houses and horses in.

This is a great idea but where do you find the proper icons? The area south of Edinburgh looks very bare and I could easily put some stuff in there but can only access the teardrops ...

i had that problem too but if you click on the tear drop icon on your listing it will bring you up a whole load of choices for you to choose from.
