Oesteo visit - what you expect

I had an oesteo out to see Kalli this morning. Had an Equine Body Worker out two weeks ago and she thought she had a slightly rotated pelvis ( left hips slight further forwards) and very stiff neck at C4. Neck was probably an 'injury' (i.e not just her) but pelvis may well just be natural asymmetry. She suggested I get a physio or oesteo out to look at Kalli, since she isn't allowed to do manipulations. She was very good. Thorough, watched her move, felt her all over, told me what she was doing and what she found etc. (plus she had a lovely english pointer who came with her
)Well, the oesteo came out today and I was not impressed.
Asked her to be tied up outside and stared into the distance whilst his assistant rubbed her over with a massage block. Didn't ask me anything about her, check her over or watch her at all. Then, without warning to her, grabbed a leg and started pulling it about. Thankfully she's a good girl and went along with it. Pink would have flipped if he'd done that to her!
Did everything by rote (stretched front legs, thumped spine, stretched back legs, twisted neck) in a clearly well practised pattern. Didn't say anything or mention anything. I tried to volenteer information (stiff bending that way, doesn't track up well in trot etc) but he didn't seem interested.
He didn't mention anything about any stiffness or sore bits, saying only 'that's her now. She's to be worked today but will take a couple of days to really loosen up' when done. Then asked for £50 and left.
He was there for 15min, max.Not pleased. Kalli didn't seem ovely bothered (although a little confused as to why some strange man was yanking her legs about) but I still have no idea what he found, how it might affect her etc. I wanted someone to tell me if her ridden problems (doesn't like bending, doesn't track up in trot) are a schooling issue or a pain problem. Grrr.
Has anyone else has Oesteopath out? What did they do? how much did they tell you?

My experience of any qualified McTimoney chiropractors are that they watch the horse move, talk to you and do a general assessmement. They also explain what they are doing & why they are doing it. Their fees range from £35-45.
The person you had may be very good but I am afraid I wouldn't have them back again with that attitdue....

did she feel any better when you did ride?
was it not possible to talk to him in the 15 mins he was there?? I wouldnt have let him leave without asking the questions I had!!.....however he does seem to have been rude, and unless she was 100% better I wouldnt be asking him back!

I have a great Mctimoney lady and she's so thorough - goes through a check list, makes sure you've got vet approval, asks lots about horsey, sees it move etc etc. Then has a feel, tells you what she thinks is wrong and sets about fixing it. This usually takes about AN HOUR.
I wouldn't have the guy back if I were you and I'd be tempted to find someone else - I'd be mightily hacked off if he'd done that to my horse.

She didn't really feel any diffferent, but it'll take a couple of days to notice the difference. Ask me again tomorrow;)
I did try to talk to him but it was clear he wasn't interested in talking. Then I didn't get the opening to ask before he left (usual for me - I'm usually quite gobby
)I most certainly won't be getting him back - if I think I'll need her checked again, I have a physio in mind.

I really rate my Osteo. He first felt G horse all over without doing anything to him, and then asked to see him walked up in hand with circles on both reins and also trotting up. Then took him back into a stable and did some manipulation explaining exactly what he was doing and why. He then did some "relaxation" techniques on him, before doing some stretchs and seeing him walk up in hand again. The whole thing took about an hour, and he was really good with g who is normally a bit nervy. I think he would have died of fear if someone had done what you describe to him!!
Also add, mine was under strict instructions not to be ridden for the next week except being hacked in straight lines....

I don't have the Oesteo out, the one round us is suppoed to be fantastic, but they take the horse apart to put it back together!
Im lucky because my YO is McTim qualified, she sees pony all day everyday, so when it comes to treating him she knows exactly what to do. However she still has him walked, trotted and turned on tight circles before treating him.
She spent an hour on Hen the last time she treated him, he had to have the next day off then hacking for 5 days and no jumping for a week. I really noticed a difference in him after she had treated him.
I wouldnt be having someone who wouldnt listen to my suggestions/questions again!

Having a little bit of training alongside an equine osteo I am appalled by your post. A 15 minute treatment which is obviously just done by rote sounds to me like a recipe for injury to any animal, horse or human.
Any therapist who doesnt even see the horse move and who takes no history does not deserve and is quite possibly not qualified to lay a hand on a horse.
Would you PM me the name of the person involved and I will find out just how qualified they are.

Having had a think about it, I'm MORE annoyed now than I was before. If I could be bothered with the hassle, I'd cancel the cheque I gave him............
Not entirely sure what I was expecting, but this wasn't it! I was expecting at least some assesment of her. The EBW I had out before (highly recommend her!) was exactly what I expected - watched her walk and trot up, asked all about any issue etc, assesed her all over etc.
This osteo is apparently fully qualified and the website says all the right stuff (hence choosing him). Spaniel, will PM you.
The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to complain.........

QR - This man sounds horrendous!!
I can tell you now that any correctly trained osteo will take a full and thorough case history to assess the problems needed to be addressed. The horse should be observed in various movements depending on the problem, and only then can a proper and effective treatment take place. Also he should have been open with his findings to you, and given you a more thorough work plan for your horse following treatment.
Unfortunately this appears to have fallen by the wayside in this practitioners case, but please don't think all osteo's are the same...there are some who do amazing work

Me thinks you use the same guy as me!!
My osteo is fantastic. Does just as described above, work also includes cranial bits too.
The first time my horse was treated he walked out like a different animal! For the first time I could here a true 4 beat walk, it was even & he swung through his whole body - really I can't explain how different he was.
We too did no ridden work for a week, then long reining & hacking in straight lines building up to normal work. Similar problem to you - suspected rotation of pelvis due to old injury, which infact was related to vertebrae L5 I believe.
Any how he is marvellous, charges £35 too.
I had him back last week to check my boy over when he had reared up & fallen over back wards on the yard - few bits of tension but otherwise fine.
I would recommend him to anyone.
Really think you were diddled I'm afraid, would def think about cancelling cheque if you still can.
