Feeding advice for yearling
      #3574874 - 06/10/2008 23:07

My ISH yearling, who is now 16 months, is a very good doer and is also very greedy, he has been since he discovered mums feed at a few days old!! He loves his grub, both hard feed and hay, just like his dam . At the moment he is out 24/7 in a field where the grass is quite poor with 3 native ponies, he comes in for a few hours during the day to be fed, have a nap and get some handling. He gets fed the recommended amount of suregrow, some linseed oil and a handful of alfa a, but he is looking quite porky . I put him on the suregrow as it's recommended for native and warmblood youngsters who are good doers. He has quite a big tummy and is well covered, but not obese and has a lovely coat and is wormed regularly.

I'm just looking to avoid him becoming any chubbier, does this sound like a suitable diet for him? I can't really feed him any less without reducing his nutritional requirements . He's a very laid back little guy, and I think I will have to watch his weight because his dam has always been a very good doer, she lives on fresh air!!!

With the winter just around the corner, I would rather see anything carrying a little extra 'covering' than not enough.

He may also be about to put in a growth spurt upwards....I think they tend to go out a bit, then up a bit!

Thanks, I know they do tend to look awkward and gangly and then grow in stages, hope he starts to grow upwards soon!! With the cold weather we've been having he's probably glad of the extra layer anyway, he hasn't started to grow his winter coat yet!!!! I just worry to much about him, he's a special little guy

He is likely to lose some weight as the goodness starts to go out of the grass. However, if you still have problems with his weight you could drop the linseed oil (oil is very rich in calories) and swap Alfa A for a low cal chaff like HiFi Lite.

Personally I would go more on how your yearling looks than what the 'recomended' levels of nutrition.

I'd continue with the sure grow but cut the oil and swap the alfa a for hi-fi lite because although you are pretty much out of the danger zone for growth problems, I wouldn't want to risk it.

I'd much rather my yearling was slightly ribby than too well covered.

My yearling has also suddenly started looking 'well covered'

He is on Healthy Hoof (because my mares are on that), and TopSpec Balancer with a little garlic and an apple every so often. He is on 5kg haylage at night, out in the day on decent grass (although they have been coming in at lunch because it is so bloody wet). Last time he went a bit porky he suddenly had a huge growth spurt He is 19 months now and I haven't measured him since he was 16
