Chortle...no wonder she goes horizontal
      #3338620 - 24/07/2008 16:39

Thought I would share this...

Just been chatting to my instructor, who schools my dearly beloved for 2 half hour sessions a week. We both experience her "oh do I have to" reply when asking her to put a little more effort into her movements, and she does grudgingly give after making you sweat. Any way..discussed what feed she was having...Dengie good doer, cos unlike me she puts on weight looking at food, a 50ml NAF scoop of DH pasture mix (for a bit of interrest in her food), and cortaflex. She also gets a ration of 6lb of hay soaked for 20 mins. Anyway, was wondering why when I give her slightly more pasture mix after a hard session, she turns into a pot smoking hippy...turns out DH Pasture mix contains magnesium, so the more she gets the more dopey she gets.

I'm going to try Badminton Working mix, in the same measure, does anyone have any other suggestions? I do really have to watch the weight issue as she has the neck of a stallion and the muscles with it. Should I mix an ALFA A oil in with her Good-dooer...I hate changing her feed regime as it can take months to get weight gain off her, but we do need to behave less like the hippy faction of cool man just done a 20m circle...sweet, when we go to dressage comps. Even if I do end up splitting my sides with laughter when she tries to picnic at FWLR on grass.

D&H Pasture Mix is also high in starch (25%) so that would cancel out a large proportion of the magnesium's calming effect if that makes sense. I know mine had it for 3 days while I ran out of feed and she went BONKERS! I think at the level you're adding it, it wouldn't make any difference either way.

What she is getting won't be providing her with enough vitamins and minerals alone, and you know if we don't eat a balanced diet and become deficient we can become a bit lethargic - same goes for horses. Maybe give her a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement like Benevit, or Equivite, or even a tonic like RedCell which can act as a "pick me up" as well as provide vitmains and minerals, that might help

Magnesium should not be making her dopey, that's now how it works. Equifeast have a really good explanation of what you can expect when feeding magnesium supplements. Basically less spooky not more dopey.

Hmm.. I feed Dengie Good Doer because it includes all the vits and micronutrients without my having to buy yet another supplement. I'm going to do w bit more research I think, but some horse have different sensitivities and my intructior knows of neddies that don't fire up no matter what they are fed...maybe my girl is this way inclined. She is in extremely good health.

Forgot to add, she has never been spooky...and I have owned her since she was 1, she is now 8.
