Scotland bids to host European Championships at Blair Castle

  • Blair Castle hopes to become the first Scottish venue to host a senior international European championship.

A team went to Lausanne, Switzerland, last week to bid for the senior FEI European Eventing Championships in 2015, supported by sports minister Hugh Robertson.

The British bid must beat others from Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium. A decision will be made in June.

Mr Robertson, a former Household Cavalry officer, described eventing as “an integral part of our sporting culture”.

He added: “We have already secured a fantastic series of major sporting events for the years after London 2012 that will leave a real sports legacy. It would be fantastic to add the European Championships to that list.”

Alec Lochore, event director of Blair Castle, said: “We believe this would continue the legacy of 2012 and inspire a new generation of riders – it’s tremendously exciting.”

The next eventing Europeans, in 2013, take place in Malmo, Sweden.
