Hugh Thomas, Badminton director and course designer

    Hugh Thomas took over from the legendary Frank Weldon as director and course-designer at Badminton in 1989.

    He was also responsible for the track at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and has designed for five junior and young rider championships.

    He held the chairmanship of the British Equestrian Federation for three years until 2008.

    Hugh previously evented at the top level himself, most notably finishing second at Badminton on Playamar in 1976, and rode at the Montreal Olympics in the same year.

    He graduated from Oxford in philosophy, politics and economics, and worked in sponsorship with BEP in London before taking over at Badminton.

    He is married to second wife Mandy, with whom he has two sons, and also has a son and a daughter from his first marriage.
