British Eventing Official of the Year 2009 passes away

  • Jacquie Mason, a stalwart British Eventing official, passed away on 25 February after a two and a half year battle with cancer, aged 63.

Jacquie, who developed a keen interest in horses at a young age, first became involved backstage with eventing in 1971 as a member of the organising committee for the former Graveley Horse Trials.

She has since been a scorer or secretary in over 60 of the country’s events, including Badminton and Burghley.

In addition to a full-time job as courses manager at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Jacquie spent at least 90 days every year at horse trials, and in 2009 alone was secretary for 11 horse trials.

At the end of last season, BE officials voted for her to be presented with the inaugural Official of the Year 2009, which will be renamed in Jacquie’s memory.

Jacquie leaves behind her husband, Nick, and daughter, Sarah, who are welcoming donations to The Garden House Hospice, McMillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Cancer Research UK.

Her funeral will take place at 11.30am on Monday 8 March at Holy Trinity Church in Weston, Herts. If you wish to attend, please e-mail Sarah on sarinoz@msn.com
