Q and A: Going affiliated

  • Q: I have owned my five-year-old 15.2hh Irish Draught gelding for one year and we have been competing in small local dressage competitions.

I now feel we are ready to move up a level and maybe compete in affiliated classes. However, I’m not sure how to go about becoming affiliated or what level of class we should be in. How can I find out?

A: Before affiliating it may be useful to have a lesson with a qualified instructor who specialises in dressage. Theywill be able to assess what level you should be aiming at.

To find out more about the sport, contact British Dressage who will supply you with a free booklet which explains the level of training expected from a horse or pony competing in affiliated Preliminary and Novice classes.

It also describes how to enter competitions, provides details on the different types of tests and suggests what equipment and clothing you need.

To get a copy of Welcome to British Dressage send anA5 stamped addressed envelope to British Dressage, National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth, Warwickshire CV8 2RJ.
