Grand National hero Mon Mome has a race named in his honour
9 April, 2009
More than 1,000 fans turned up at Hereford racecourse yesterday (Wednesday, 8 April) to welcome home 2009 Grand National hero Mon Mome.
Trained by Herefordshire-based Venetia Williams, the 100-1 outsider romped home under 23-year-old Liam Tredwell in last Saturday’s (4 April) big race at Aintree.
Mon Mome’s will also be parading at The April Meeting at Cheltenham next Friday (17 April).
The Grand National star, who beat 2007 winner Comply Or Die by 10 lengths, will also have a race at Cheltenham named in his honour for the day.
The Mon Mome Handicap Chase at 7.20pm will be over three and a half miles.
Edward Gillespie, Cheltenham’s managing director, said: “People always like to see the Grand National winner. As we were planning for next week's meeting, we thought this was the next obvious opportunity for people to congratulate Mon Mome and his connections.
“Mon Mome won here in December and he's trained fairly locally, which was a good start and, as it's a long-distance chase, the race was the right one.
“We do like to honour our own and show our appreciation while they are still with us and we normally find that racegoers react positively and enjoy seeing people and horses being celebrated.”
