Hunt facts: South Durham

Adrian Dangar

Hunt: the South Durham as now constituted has existed since 1872 and owes its origins to the Old Sedgefield hunt, which was at its height in the early part of the 19th century

Country: extends to a little more than 16 miles square inside Co Durham, stretching as far as the River Wear. Motorways, industry and housing estates have encroached badly on the country, but there are still pockets of grassland and fly fences in the best areas

Best thing about the hunt: “Nearly all our subscribers and supporters are working people from this area, and every one of them is passionate about keeping the hunt going,” says Mark Shotten MFH

Most challenging aspect: “We’re very tight for country here, and the biggest challenge is keeping a decent hunt going within the constraints of major main roads and urbanisation. I have to plan the draw very carefully and hope foxes run in the right direction across accessible country,” explains Simon Dobinson, huntsman
