8 events to make the most of before winter sets in


  • While competitions continue throughout winter with plenty to keep us and our horses busy, there are some events that you need to make the most of now while light and weather allow.

    Here’s a selection of competitions that you need to check out before those cold, dark days set in.

    Unaffiliated eventers’ challenge

    Date: 3 September
    Venue: Moores Farm Equestrian Centre, Gloucestershire
    Details: A mixture of showjumping and cross-country style fences (approximately eight in each section) to be held on grass.

    Unaffiliated summer dressage championship qualifiers

    Date: 3 September
    Venue: Buryhill Competition Centre, Wiltshire
    Details: Classes include Prelim, Novice and Elementary tests

    Unaffiliated one-day event

    Date: 4 September
    Venue: Gasstons Stables, Surrey
    Details: Classes include 55cm, 75cm and 95cm — an exciting opportunity for novice and advanced riders alike. The cross-country course is very welcoming for beginners but it can also create some testing questions for the more experienced eventer.

    Cross-country clinic

    Date: 4 September
    Venue: Foresterseat Cross-Country, Perth
    Details: Practice your cross-country riding with Marine Tellier, a horse behaviourist and riding instructor. Fences are from 30cm to 1m, Open to all riders with any abilities as long as you can control your horse in an open space.

    Strathendrick Annual Family Show

    Date: 4 September
    Venue: Sandyflat RDA Glasgow
    Details: A huge range of classes on offer for all levels of ability and types of horses and ponies. From in-hand classes to ridden show classes, including working hunters and veterans.

    Unaffiliated two-phase eventers’ challenge

    Date: 10 September
    Venue: Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre, Gloucestershire
    Details: Jump a course of showjumps, then head off round a shortened cross-country course, with a timed section. Classes from 30cm to 80cm with lead-rein options.

    Hunter trial

    Date: 11 September
    Venue: Ipley Manor, Hampshire
    Details: The New Forest Hound’s hunter trial includes pairs and individual classes ranging from 2’3” to 3’3” in height, over grassland and through scenic woodland.

    Jumping derby

    Date: 18 September
    Venue: Forest Edge Arena, Norfolk
    Details: The Derby consists of seven showjumps on the grass arena, straight onto eight cross-country jumps on the cross-country course. Classes from clear round and 55cm to 85cm.
