Royal Veterinary College awards honorary doctorate

  • The Royal Veterinary College has awarded the founder and director of The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust an honorary doctorate.

Heather Armstrong received the honorary doctorate of veterinary medicine and surgery last week (Wednesday 25 July), in recognition of the service that she has provided to animal and humanitarian welfare in The Gambia.

The trust was established in 2002 with Heather’s sister, the late Stella Brewer Marsde, to improve the health, welfare and productivity of equines in The Gambia.

“Heather’s passion is for both people and animals,” said a spokesman for The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust.

“She believes that the plight of people and their animals are closely interrelated and has a strong interest in the relationship between the welfare of working animals and the prosperity of communities.

“Her aim has always been to provide the Gambian farmers with the skills required to effectively manage their own equines.”

The trust’s work ranges from providing mobile veterinary clinics to training farriers and harness makers.
