Latest advice on equine diseases published for breeding industry

The latest advice on controlling and preventing infectious equine diseases has been published.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) annually publishes codes of practice for the equine breeding industry, to help keep Britain’s horse population free from disease.
The 2010 Codes of Practice are available now, with the most up-to-date advice on the prevention and control of the diseases which represent a potential major threat to equine breeding in Britain.
The codes cover contagious equine metritis organism (CEMO), equine viral arteritis (EVA), equine herpesvirus (EHV), equine coital exanthema (ECE), equine infectious anaemia (EIA or “swamp fever”) and strangles.
Racehorse vet and breeding expert Chris Rea chairs the codes of practice sub-committee.
He said: “The Codes of Practice have been a first choice of reference for over 30 years and have undoubtedly contributed to the relatively low level of infectious disease affecting the equine breeding population in Britain.”
