Some good and bad news to report this week. Very sadly my top horse Kitkat (Another Breakfast) has picked up a minor leg injury and so needs some time off.
He isn’t lame so he can keep ticking over by going on the walker and we have picked it up early on, so fingers crossed it won’t take too long to mend. It’s a real kick in the teeth when he’s my only top-level horse, but he is still young, it could be worse and he will be back.
The good news is that my retired 3-star mare Totty (Totten Lady, pictured above at Bramham last year) has scanned in-foal to advanced eventing stallion Up With The Lark, so hopefully all will go smoothly from now on.
With Kitkat out of action I will be able to give a lot of time to the babies and Myrtle (In Vogue II) is going to have to step up into the number 1 spot. We had her and Skippy (Abakala Flagmount) at Chepstow on Saturday; Myrtle in the novice regional final (NRF) and Skippy in the novice.
Unfortunately the heavens opened quite spectacularly and there was a huge amount of rainfall in a short space of time so the going got pretty deep in the showjumping. As a result I decided to save Skippy for another day.
Myrtle did a good test for 33.6 but she didn’t cope with the showjumping conditions at all and had a very uncharacteristic 3 down. I still decided to give her a run cross-country as it was a lovely course and the ground was much better. She flew round but with our showjumping faults we missed out on gaining our qualification for Gatcombe.
We are off to Barbury Castle this week, which is my absolute favourite event. Myrtle is going to do the guinea pig test for the CIC2* class, which will be fantastic experience for her, Archie (Arise Cavalier) is going for the Dubarry Burghley young event horse class and Skippy is in the novice.
