How to maintain your horse trailer
Your trailer will last longer, saving you money on repairs and maintenance, if you care for it appropriately. If at all possible store your trailer under cover to keep it dry and on hardstanding to protect the tyres. Don’t forget to clear out the bedding and leave it clean and dry every time you use it — this protects the flooring.
Every month, carry out the following checks:
- Clean the trailer inside and out, leaving it to dry thoroughly
- Lift the matting to check the floor is solid and not rusting or rotting (important on both metal and wooden floors)
- Check the tyres — including the spare — for cracks and wear. Check the tread is at least 1.6mm deep
- Ensure the ramps are in working order and spray hinges with WD40 where necessary
- Grease the towball
