What you didn’t know about… Major Moylaw

  • Loraine Homer tells H&H about the heavyweight hunter who rides like a hack.

    Fact file

    Stable name: Bud

    Age: seven

    Height: 17.1hh

    Breed: Irish sport horse

    Sire: Romabo

    Dam: Moylaw Ginger

    Discipline: showing

Owner: Mr & Mrs Alan Hall

    Rider: Loraine Homer

Groom: Victoria Sanders Best ever result: champion hunter at the Royal International Horse Show in 2011

    Five things you didn’t know…

1 He was bred by Mr and Mrs Oliver Flanagan, who live in Co Mayo, Ireland.

2 He is the only hunter Loraine has campaigned as an open horse in his four-year-old year. He was exceptional, winning major shows – including standing champion hunter at Bramham – and qualifying for the Royal International (RIHS) and Horse of the Year Show (HOYS).

3 He is a fair-weather fellow, so if it is a cold and windy day we don’t usually ride him.

4 I broke him in November 2008 and he won his first class in March 2009 – the novice heavyweight indoors at Addington Manor EC.

5 As a four-year-old, we had several lessons with dressage supremo Emile Faurie, who thought he was a fabulous prospect.
