Research boost for Hartpury

  • Hartpury College is increasing its research activities following a successful project for Dodson & Horrell

Hartpury College is increasing its research activities throughout its subject areas following a successful six-week feed trial for Dodson & Horrell.

The feed trial investigated the palatability of various Dodson & Horrell feeds that are in development. It involved twice daily feeding, observing the horses’ behaviour and registering their intake.

Hartpury students played an active role in the feed trial, with data collected by senior lab technician Ailison Kelland. The final report for the company was written by Ailison and Rachel Williams, Hartpury’s head of research.

“Nine college horses were involved in the trial which ran for six weeks,” explained Ailison. “The horse’s behaviour was closely observed throughout the trial, which was considered a great success.”

Rachel said: “We are looking to increase our research activity at the equine unit, and hope that both staff and students will become increasingly involved.”
