In the Frame

  • H&H reviews In the Frame by Racing Post photographer Edward Whitaker

In this book, multi award-winning photographer Edward Whitaker showcases images from his 22 years at the Racing Post. In the Frame is themed around the four seasons and each section contains classic images of that season’s most famous racecourses from Cheltenham and Ascot to Kentucky and Hong Kong.

The book is beautifully presented, yet what makes it extraordinary is the photographer’s obvious passion for his subject. Whether it be bolting his camera to the top of the start box or crouching down in the grass to get a “mole’s eye view”, Whitaker constantly pushes boundaries in order to give us racing pictures that are not only unconventional, but downright artistic. Punctuating these are intimate, candid portraits of some of racing’s most iconic names, including a moving shot of an elderly Lester Piggott riding an equally aged Desert Orchid.

Whitaker’s pictures range from the stunning to the shocking, but above all, they show a celebration of racing, from the glamorous ladies at Ascot to the long hours spent training. No racing-lover should be without it.
